People have been setting New Year’s resolutions since the beginning of time. Setting a goal and working towards it not only helps you feel accomplished but also keeps you motivated to reach your goals. However, for some reason, many people fail to meet their resolutions by February or March. This is unfortunate because that means they may have to wait another year before trying again!


Among the new year resolution ideas that many people are focused include  fitness and lifestyle changes, such as eating healthier or quitting smoking. Living a healthy lifestyle is a common goal, but it can be difficult to achieve. If you have attempted to lose weight or eat healthier in the past, then chances are that it didn’t work out for a variety of reasons. If this is one of your good new year's resolutions, here are some tips for keeping your new year resolutions.


  1. Know Why You Want to Achieve Your Goal

If you don’t know why you want something, chances are that once the going gets tough. Knowing your “why” will give you a reason to push through the hard times when they come about.


To help yourself determine your true motivation behind losing weight or eating healthier, try thinking of three reasons why this is important to you right now in particular. Don’t deliborate with excuses like “I need to lose 20 pounds because I am overweight” but rather answer: “My health has declined over time, and I can no longer live with my bad habits.” Include personal motivations such as wanting more energy so that playing with kids is easier or wanting to feel more attractive for a special occasion. Once you have determined why it is important to lose weight, set goals that will help you stay focused on your goal of living healthier.


  1. Make a Plan

One of the best ways to ensure that you reach your goals is by making a plan. This means writing down what you need to do and when you will do it. Having a timeline for your goal gives you something to work towards, as well as accountability.


If weight loss or eating healthier are your resolutions, your plan should include what foods you will be eating, when you will be working out, and how often. You may also want to make a list of healthy foods that you can easily access and keep in your kitchen.

Having someone to support you and cheer you on is a great way to stay motivated. This can be your spouse, family members, or even friends from work. Saying that you want to lose weight is a great resolution idea, but it doesn’t really give you any direction as to how much weight. Instead of just saying, “I will lose 20 pounds in the next year”, try setting attainable goals such as losing one pound per week or exercising three times this month. Measurable goals also give you a timeline, and they let you know if your plan is working.


  1. Set Timeline and Milestones

Along with setting measurable goals, it is also important to set milestones or checkpoints. This will help you stay on track and make sure that you are making progress towards your goal. For example, if your goal is to lose weight, your milestones might be losing five pounds in the first month, ten pounds in two months, and fifteen pounds in three months. This way, you can see if your plan is working and make adjustments as necessary while still moving towards the final goal of 20 pounds by the end of four months.
